The origin of mentoring.

The origin of mentoring.

We all know that if you have a mentor you are much more likely to be successful than if you go it totally alone. But where and when did the concept of a mentor originate?

Mentor was the name of the adviser of the young Telemachus, son of Odysseus and Penelope, in Homer’s Odyssey.  An infant when Odysseus left for Troy, Telemachus is about twenty at the beginning of the story.

He lacks poise and confidence, but Mentor encourages him to begin a journey of discovery to find his father.   In the following episodes, as he searches for his father, Mentor advises him and offers him guidance and support.

Thus, from nearly three thousand years ago we have come to inherit the word “mentor” as a wise and trusted adviser, supporter and counsellor. #proteuscareermanagement
